About

I am a doctor, a surgeon, a sportsperson and father. I’m also something of a perfectionist, with a strong sense that every one of my patients should be treated the way I would expect for my family.

Hi, For anyone contenplating having knee surgery Dr Charles Wilis -Owen is probably the finest surgeon in the country ! I had my second full knee replacement in Dec. 22 - now no pain ! walking 3-4 miles and cycling 20 miles at any one time- not everyday but 3 or 4 times a week. Can't recommend Charles enough- - Great surgeon. - Great communicator- - Everthing explained sympathetlcly. - No nonsense- positivity all the way. Best Martin Clark- Broadstone.

Qualifications and training

I benefited from a first-class medical education at Oxford University qualifying as a doctor in 2000. I worked as a junior doctor in the Oxford region, then moved to the prestigious North West Thames training program to specialise in orthopaedics.

I’m dual-qualified in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine and I’m both a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and a Member of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, so I can offer the best of both specialities. I’m also trained in sports psychology!

During my six years of training, I was really lucky to be awarded a top fellowship at Sportsmed SA, the leading sports clinic in South Australia. In this extraordinary year, I learned from some of the worlds best sports knee and hip surgeons and have adopted lots of their techniques and refined them further.

Career

I was one of the youngest surgeons ever to pass the orthopaedic exit exam (FRCS Tr&Orth) and I spent the first six months of consultancy performing major trauma surgery at St Mary’s hospital in central London. I then worked in South East London for four years where I honed my skills and developed my reputation in the cut and thrust of London. I have finally settled in a beautiful spot of Poole and Bournemouth to give my 3 children the best quality of life the UK has to offer.

Both during my training and since becoming a consultant I have been active in clinical research and academia. I have published over 40 international papers and book chapters. I’ve been invited to present at scientific meetings and teach other surgeons on courses all around the world. I provide advice to the orthopaedic industry and the GMC and the Courts as an expert.

Sporting accomplishments

Passionate about all forms of sport, I have represented Great Britain in the cycling World Championships, tried to break world records, competed at international elite level for marathon running as well as at university and regional levels for cycling, triathlon, and rowing.

I’ve suffered almost every running injury going as well as lots of broken bones, so I have a unique insight into the problems of athletes at all levels and frustration that injury can cause.

Medicolegal

I work as an expert witness for the Courts and the GMC, my medicolegal page is here.
